Lessons from the Hot Seat: Governing at the Local and Regional Level
What’s it like to face the public, make a decision that doesn’t please everyone, and end with an accomplishment that betters the world around you? I’ve tackled that situation as an elected member of the Walnut Creek City Council in Northern California and of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Board. Among the stories in this book, you'll learn how Walnut Creek faced ten years of battles about growth control, built the Regional Center for the Arts, and convinced the voters to buy 1800 acres of open space. The case studies featuring BART include how we handled the police shooting of a Black man on the train platform, the path we took to extend service 10 miles further east, and how BART resolved its labor strikes.
